Biometrics and Facial Recognition
This week, Youth4Youth once again held another session at ESF South Island School, this time, centred around biometrics, more specifically facial recognition tools. Students were able to learn about different biometric tools including voice recognition, retina recognition, facial recognition, fingerprint recognition and heart rate sensors (as lie detectors). We taught the students about the three basic steps involved in facial recognition: capture (taking the photo), measure (facial features via landmarks and nodal points, e.g. distance between the eyes), convert (the measurements are converted into a mathematical formula).
Students had the opportunity to explore Every Pixel Labs where they used image keywording tools on their own images as well as others online. We then taught the students about how age recognition tools that use images of a person as input work and they got the opportunity to try out these tools themselves! This session involved some very important discussions about the future of biometrics and how it might be applied to different sectors and industries.
